DHARAN: Mega Three Star Club eased to the 14th International Invitational Budha Subba Gold Cup semi-finals with a 3-0 win over African United Club here at the ANFA Academy grounds today.
Sabindra Shrestha, Buddha Chemjong and Bikram Lama scored for the Lalitpur-based ‘A’ Division outfits. The three-time champions here, Three Star next play the winners of the match between Yeti Himalayan Sherpa Club and Hong Kong Nepalese Team on Thursday.
Thee Star took an early fourth minute lead, Sabindra firing home following a corner kick from Anil Ojha. The Lalitpur-based team had to wait another 72 minutes to double their lead against the physically strong African United. Buddha capitalised on a cross from Biraj Maharjan to make it 2-0 before Bikram completed an emphatic victory, scoring the third deep into the second half injury time.
Three star would have won by even big margin had not they wasted several goal scoring opportunities. African United goalkeeper Ibrahim Bashir denied Santosh Sahukhala early in the first minute while Buddha also missed out on scoring twice in the 26th and 35th minute.
African United keeper Ibrahim also put out Buddha’s strike six minutes after the interval before the custodian denied Sahukhala in the 75th minute. African United were reduced to 10 men after Mbambo was sent off for second bookable offence in the dying moments of the game.
Three Star coach Megh Raj KC praised the way his boys performed against the physically imposing African United players. “We field five newcomers in the match and I was worried about the team’s performance,” said KC adding that the performance of his players impressed him very much. African United coach Ezee blamed the poor ground condition for his side’s disappointing performance.
Nepal Police Club will take on CFC Bhutan on Monday.
